Best Exercise Bike Reviews – Stationary Upright Exercise Bike 2018

Exercise bikes provide an effective cardio workout and help improve your fitness levels. Stationary bike weight loss results quite fast and significant, especially with the upright exercise bikes. So, if you are struggling to lose weight, especially the fat around your belly, bicycling for weight loss could give you definitive results.

Stationary bikes are of two types; recumbent and upright. Here are a few details regarding recumbent exercise bike vs upright one:

  • Recumbent bike targets glutes, quads, hamstring, calves, and tibilais anterior muscles, whereas upright stationary bicycle targets all the muscles that are used during outdoor cycling which includes the core muscles.
  • Since upright bikes target abdominal muscles and upper body and hands muscles, the exercise bike weight loss results are much better than recumbent bike weight loss
  • Recumbent bikes are meant for people who either exclusively need lower body workout or for those who have back problems and are unable to use the upright exercise bike.

Now that you have a clear idea of recumbent vs upright bike, let’s look at some the best upright exercise bikes that you can consider for your home.

Exercise Bike Features to Consider Before Buying One

Before buying an upright exercise bike, clearly define what your exercise goals are and then, choose a bike depending upon them. Most buyers overestimate their capabilities and end up buying a machine that isn’t really suitable for them. If you are new to indoor cycling, you may buy a used stationary bike initially and see how you feel. Once you feel comfortable in using an upright exercise bike, you can buy a new one. Alternatively, you can buy a bike exercise stand and try getting a first-hand experience of how indoor cycles feel. Bicycle exercise stands are cheaper and they are great for people who want to use their outdoor cycle indoors occasionally during harsh weather. Want to know how to make a bike stationary? Watch this video:

Upright bikes are not meant for everyone. They are better than the spin cycles in which you have to lean forward but they are still not recommended for people with back problems. But, if you are convinced that upright exercise bike is the right exercise machine for you, here are a few things that you must keep in mind while buying one:

Adjustability

Most upright exercise bikes come with vertically adjustable seat and handlebars that move within a specific range. The adjustability range is such that it can easily accommodate average-sized people. But, if your height is not within the adjustability range of the bike, look for other options. Do not buy bikes that are too long or too short for you, as you won’t feel comfortable using them. The cheap exercise bikes offer only vertical seat and handlebar adjustment, whereas the expensive ones offer both vertical as well as horizontal adjustment. If you are planning to use it for more than 5 hours a week or if you are looking for serious cardio workouts, prefer bikes that are fully adjustable so that you can choose your comfortable position to target your specific muscle group.

Resistance Levels

Indoor bikes use two types of resistance; mechanical and magnetic. Mechanical resistance is variable and is activated by turning the knob located on the frame. The knob pushes brake pads closer to the belt, thereby increasing the friction and the resistance. Since mechanical resistance utilizes friction, it needs a lot of maintenance, plus it is not very smooth in operation, especially when you are using high resistance. Nevertheless, it is good for a casual exerciser. Magnetic system, on the other hand, utilizes magnetic force to slow down the flywheel. Bikes that use magnetic resistance hardly require any maintenance as no friction is used in them. They have a very quiet operation. Magnetic exercise bikes are expensive as compared to the mechanical ones.

If you are a casual exerciser or just a beginner, mechanical upright bikes are enough to fulfill your fitness needs but if you are very serious about your workout or are planning to use it for intense workouts, go for magnetic bikes.

Please note: Never choose a bike whose resistance is too less or too much as compared to your stamina. Choose a bike that provides just enough resistance to help you achieve your fitness goals.

Weight capacity

Most exercise bikes have a weight bearing capacity of 250 pounds to 350 pounds and even more. So, wearing bearing capacity isn’t going to be an issue with most people unless you are severely obese. Still, make sure you always check its weight limit and ensure that it falls within your weight to prevent undue pressure on the machine. Further, if you have a very well-built body, never buy lightweight machines as they can trip and cause injuries. Always buy sturdy and stable machines.

LCD console

Inexpensive stationary exercise bikes often come without a console, which isn’t a problem if you are a casual exerciser but if you are an athlete or are preparing for a marathon or race, a console is certainly going to help you. A basic console displays vital workout stats such as speed, distance traveled, number of calories burnt, time, etc. Advanced consoles are designed to display vital stats as well as let you transfer them to fitness apps through Bluetooth so you can refer them in future. Some of them come with pre-defined workouts too to take the guesswork away and help you achieve your fitness goals. Some also have inbuilt speakers so that you can listen to music while working out.

Some other important features that you should consider are:

  • Exercise bikes with poorly fitted toe straps are very uncomfortable. Your feet will constantly slip out and you may even end up hurting yourself. Prefer bikes whose pedals have toe cages to prevent slippages.
  • If you have a small house and do not have a dedicated space for the stationary bike, buy one that has a foldable design and comes with transportation wheels for easily moving it around the house.
  • Best exercise bikes are the ones that come with longer, better warranties. Good warranty duration indicates that the bike is sturdy and it will last for a long time without requiring much maintenance and repair.

We hope this blog helps you choose the right upright exercise bike for your home. If you need a more realistic cycling experience, spin bikes are a great option for you, but the problem with them is that you need to bend over to use them just like you use outdoor racing bicycles. If bending isn’t a problem with you, here are some of the top selling spin exercise bikes that you may consider. If you however, have back problem, you should buy recumbent bikes. They are exclusively meant for lower body workouts and are designed to keep your back relaxed. Here are some recumbent bikes that we recommend.
